Ireland GDP surges almost 14% in 2021 thanks to multinational sectors

Ireland enjoyed high economic growth in 2021, figures from the Central Statistics Office showed Friday, driven by a strong upturn in multinational dominated sectors.

Gross domestic product increased by 13.5% in 2021 from 2020, while gross national product was up 11.5%.

Growth continued in the more globalised sectors of the economy, said Assistant Director General Jennifer Banim, with the Industry secctor increasing by 24% and the Information & Communication sector growing by 14% in the year.

Overall, the multinational-dominated sector growth was 22% and in 2021, these sectors accounted for 56% of total value added in the economy, compared with a 53% share in 2020 and a 45% share in 2019.

Several sectors focused on the domestic market experienced higher levels of economic activity in 2021, with the Distribution, Transport Hotels & Restaurants sector growing by 6.2% and Arts & Entertainment increasing by 13%.

However, the Construction sector contracted by 4.7% in the year and Agriculture, Forestry & Fishing by 1.4%.
