Retail sales in Ireland continued to recover from the virus pandemic in February, according to new data released on Monday.
Ireland's Central Statistics Office said the retail sales index rose 2.2% in February on an annual basis, slowing from 19% growth in January. Retail sales in February were 3.1% higher than February two years ago, before Covid-19 hit.
‘Several sectors showed very large annual increases in the volume of sales, compared with February 2021 when a full lockdown of non-essential retail and services was in force,’ CSO said.
Bar sales multiplied year-on-year, as did Clothing & Footwear sales. However Bar sales in February were 30% behind February of 2020, before the pandemic.
On a monthly basis, sales in February were up 0.9% from January, picking up from a month-on-month decline of 1.5% in January from December.
Bar sales were up 14% in the month, with Hardware, Paints & Glass up 7.0% and Electrical Goods up by 4.8%. Department Stores sales fell by 5.4% compared to January, and Furniture & Lighting sales fell by 1.2%.
