The number of US workers filing for first time unemployment benefits rose to its highest level since mid-February, figures from the Department of Labor showed on Thursday.

For the week ended April 30, US initial jobless claims were 200,000, up from 181,000 claims the week before. The latest figure was above the market forecast, cited by FXStreet, of 182,000.

Conversely, continuing US jobless claims in the week ended April 23 fell to 1.38 million from 1.4 million the week prior.

The figures come ahead of the more closely watched Labor Department jobs report for April, which is expected to show that payrolls rose by 394,000, less than the 431 000 jobs added in March.

The US unemployment rate is expected to inch down slightly to 3.5% in April, the lowest level since the pandemic began in February 2020.
