Irish economy grows 1.8% in second quarter, as domestic activity rises

Ireland's economy grew 1.8% in the second quarter from the first quarter of 2022, figures from the Central Statistics Office showed on Friday.

Gross domestic product totalled €115.8 billion in the second quarter. The 1.1% rise shows growth in Ireland has slowed considerably from the 10.8% rise seen in the first quarter from the final quarter of 2021.

Gross national product - which excludes profit from multinationals - rose 2.1% in the quarter.

Multinational-dominated sectors rose 6.0% in the quarter, compared to 0.9% growth in all other sectors.

By sector, the GDP growth was led by 5.0% growth in Industry excluding Construction, and 4.9% growth in Information & Communication.

Professional, Admin & Support services, and Financial & Insurance Activities saw slight declines of 0.3% and 0.4% respectively.

Modified domestic demand - a measure of underlying domestic activity that covers personal, government and investment spending - rose by 4.3% compared to a 1.0% decline in the first quarter.

The balance of payments current account was in surplus of €15.8 billion in the second quarter, narrowed year-on-year from €16.4 billion.
