TOP NEWS: EU grows 0.2% in third quarter, employment increases 0.2%

Gross domestic product increased by 0.2% in the three months to September, compared to the previous quarter, statistics published on Tuesday by Eurostat showed.

This quarter's figures for seasonally adjusted GDP, which was identical for the euro area and the wider EU, was in line with analysts' consensus quoted by FXStreet.

In the second quarter of 2022, GDP had grown by 0.8% in the euro area and by 0.7% in the EU.

Compared with the same quarter of the previous year, GDP increased by 2.1% in the euro area and by 2.4% in the EU in the third quarter of 2022.

The fastest growing countries compared to the previous quarter were Cyprus and Romania, both growing at 1.3% while Slovenia contracted 1.4% and Latvia 1.7%.

Compared to the same quarter last year, Cyprus had grown 5.4% and Portugal 4.9% while Latvia contracted 0.4%, the only economy to shrink in the period.

The number of employed persons increased by 0.2% in the euro area and the EU compared to the previous quarter. This was slightly slower than the FXStreet quoted consensus of a 0.3% increase.

Compared with the same quarter of the previous year, employment increased by 1.7% in the euro area and by 1.5% in the EU in the third quarter of 2022.
