Inflation in Ireland accelerated in February, according to official statistics on Thursday.
According to the Central Statistics Office, the consumer price index rose by 8.5% in February from the year before, speeding up from a 7.8% rise in January.
‘This is the seventeenth straight month where the annual increase in the CPI has been at least 5.0%,’ the CSO noted.
‘The divisions with the largest increases in the 12 months to February 2023 were housing, water, electricity, gas & other fuels, rising 26%, and food & non-alcoholic beverages, rising 13%.’
From the month before, consumer prices were 1.6% higher in February, having fallen by 0.8% in January.
Over February, clothing & footwear prices rose 6.8% from the month before, while recreation & culture prices rose 3.5%.
On a harmonised basis - which allows for EU-wide comparison, annual inflation rose to 8.1% from 7.5%. Harmonised prices rose 1.5% in the month, compared to a 1.0% drop in January.
