EU ambassadors have agreed on a common position for the bloc’s 2024 draft budget that would see €187 billion in commitments, according to statement issued by member states on Wednesday.

The position still has to be formally adopted. It will then provide the basis for budget negotiations with the European Parliament.

Last year, the states and the parliament had agreed on €186.6 billion for the 2023 joint budget.

The European Commission, the EU’s executive arm, had earlier proposed €189.3 billion for the 2024 budget.

Next year’s annual budget is the fourth under the multi-annual financial framework for the period 2021-27.

In 2020, the EU agreed on an approximately €1.1 trillion seven-year budget after tough negotiations. At the end of June, the commission had asked the member states for an additional €66 billion from 2024 until 2027 to cover extra costs.
