Irish retail sales growth slows to 5.9% annually in July - CSO

Annual growth in Irish retail sales volumes slowed last month, according to figures from the Central Statistics Office on Monday.

In July, Irish retail sales volumes fell 0.8% month-on-month, after seeing 0.4% increase in June.

Annually, retail sales volumes were 5.9% ahead of July 2022, slowing from the 7.6% annual growth in June.

Excluding motor trades, volumes fell 4.0% in July from June, and rose just 0.3% from the prior year.

The largest falls in volumes over the month were in bars, 5.5%; food, beverages & tobacco, specialised stores, 4.3%; non-specialised stores including supermarkets, 3.5%; hardware, paints & glass, 3.5%; and books, newspapers & stationery, 3.3%.

Other retail sales rose 1.1%, furniture and lighting rose 0.6%, electrical goods were up 0.5%, while fuel sales edged up 0.4%.
