Smith & Nephew PLC on Thursday announced that BT Group PLC’s chief financial officer, Simon Lowth, will join the board as independent non-executive director on January 1.

Prior to BT, Lowth was CFO of BG Group - now part of Shell PLC - AstraZeneca PLC, and Scottish Power.

In addition, Jez Maiden, who retired as finance director at Yorkshire-based chemicals firm Croda International PLC earlier this year, joins Hertfordshire-based medical technology company Smith & Nephew as an independent non-executive director on Thursday.

S&N also confirmed Rupert Soames will join as chair on Friday as planned.

Incoming Chair Soames said: ‘We are delighted to be able to announce two such strong appointments to our board. Simon and Jez bring deep executive and non-executive experience of serving on boards of companies which have had to address strategic and operational challenges across a number of different industries, including life-sciences and healthcare. They both have experience of supervising large operations in the US, Europe and Asia and of working in highly-regulated industries.’

Smith & Nephew shares were 0.6% lower at 1,061.50 pence each on Thursday morning in London.
