Ireland retail sales down in August on month and annual rise slows

Ireland retail sales declined slightly in August from July, with the biggest decreases seen in motor trade and furniture & lighting, according to new data from the Central Statistics Office on Wednesday.

In August, retail sales edged down 0.1% month-on-month, compared to a 0.6% slip in July from June.

The biggest monthly volume decreases were in other retail sales, down 2.8%; motor trades, down 0.6%; and furniture & lighting, down 0.5%. The largest monthly volume increases were in pharmaceuticals, medical & cosmetic articles, up 8.4%.

Over the past 12 months prior, retail sales rose by 3.6% in August, cooling from a 5.9% annual rise the month before.

The largest annual volume growth was in motor trades; pharmaceuticals, medical & cosmetic article; and other retail sales, up 11%, 7.6%, and 6.0%, respectively.
