The UK van market continued to grow in September, the Society of Motor Manufacturers & Traders reported Thursday.
Registrations in September climbed 28% annually to 44,760 from 34,950 a year prior. The battery electric vans market jumped 86% to 2,882 vehicles from 1,550 year-on-year in September, the larger diesel van market climbed 24% to 40,372 new vehicles on the road from 32,656.
In the first 9 months of 2023, 257,979 new vans were registered in the UK, up 21% from 213,576 a year ago.
Deliveries of the smallest vans fell by 13%, medium-sized vans jumped 89% and the largest vans, weighing 2.5 tonnes to 3.5 tonnes, rose by 13% year-on-year in September.
Notably, a record 14,296 electric vans have been registered in the UK since January, now representing 5.5% of the overall market.
SMMT Chief Executive Mike Hawes said: ‘Vans are irreplaceable workhorses that keep Britain on the move, so a bumper September capping nine months of growing fleet renewal is good news for the economy, the environment and society. Decarbonising this sector is fundamental to the wider net zero transition and, as vans are business critical, urgent measures are needed to grow operator confidence to invest now, in 2024 and beyond. In particular, the specific needs of van operators must be considered when planning public charging strategies.’
