Irish economy falls driven by multinational dominated sectors

The Irish economy fell in the third quarter of 2023, data from the Central Statistics Office showed on Friday.

According to early estimates, gross domestic product fell by 1.8% in the third quarter of 2023, when compared to the second quarter. GDP increased by 0.5% in the second quarter of 2023 from the first quarter of the year.

‘The result was driven mainly by decreases in the multinational dominated sectors in [the third quarter of] 2023,’ the CSO said.

GDP is estimated to have decreased by 4.7% when compared to the same quarter a year ago.

Also on Friday, the CSO published retail sales data for September.

In September, the volume of retail sales fell by 1.2% when compared with August. On an annual basis, they increased by 2.5%.
