UK house prices declined annually at the end of last year, the official Office for National Statistics measure showed Wednesday.

The ONS said the average UK house price was 1.4% lower on-year in December. This compared favourably to a 2.3% fall registered in November, however.

On a seasonally-adjusted basis, prices rose 0.3% on-month in December. They had fallen 0.7% in November from October.

Mortgage lenders Halifax and Nationwide have already releases their house price index readings for January.

Numbers last week showed UK house prices rose for the fourth consecutive month in January, according to data from Halifax.

The Halifax house price index rose 1.3% on a monthly basis in January, after rising by 1.1% in December. On an annual basis, prices rose 2.5%, having risen 1.8% in December. Annual growth was the highest since January last year.

The Nationwide measure showed a 0.7% monthly increase in January, but an annual decline of 0.2%.
