Retail sales in Ireland slip into decline in April as food sales fall

Retail sales in Ireland fell both monthly and annually in April, the Central Statistics Office reported Tuesday.

Retail sales declined by 1.2% in April from March, swung from a 1.7% climb in March from February.

On an annual basis, retail sales fell 0.9% in April, compared to 1.0% growth in March.

Notably, the largest annual volume declines in April were in food, beverages & tobacco, of 7.9%. The second largest fall was of 7.3% in sales for books, newspapers & stationery, followed by a 6.3% decline for department stores sales.

Meanwhile, clothing, footwear & textile sales were up 8.5% year-on-year, electrical goods sales were 6.1% higher, and furniture & lighting sales were up 4.7%.
