US building permits surge in August to 1.42m

US privately‐owned housing units authorised by building permits in August rose 7.7% to an annual rate of 1.42m, according to the Census Bureau.

The reading was above market expectations of 1.31m and July's reading of 1.32m.

Housing starts jumped 12% to 1.36m, ahead of market expectations of 1.25m.
