The US unemployment rate fell to 3.5% in September, down from 3.7% in August, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.
The market had been expecting the jobless rate to stay steady at 3.7%.
Total non-farm payroll employment rose by 136k, below expectations of a 145k increase.
Average hourly earnings edged back 1 cent to $28.09, after rising by 11 cents in August. The market had expected a 0.3% rise.
